老鸛草屬一、二年生或多年生草本，廣泛分佈北半球溫帶氣候區及亞熱帶的高海拔山區，亦入侵南美洲溫帶氣候區，臺灣高海拔山區亦有分佈。株高30~60cm。全株 The whole plant有毛。對生五角形三至五深裂呈複葉狀葉片，長2~6cm，寬3~7.5cm。花粉紅或紫紅色，直徑0.5~1.2cm。蒴果具長喙狀突起。野生者開花期春季，園區內全年開花。

A annual, biennial or perennial herb in the genus Geranium, widely distributed in the temperate zones of the northern hemisphere and the high-altitude mountains of the subtropical zone, now an invasive alien species in the temperate climate zones of South America. It’s also distributed in the high-altitude mountains of Taiwan. Plant height 30~60cm, hairy. Leaves opposite, compound, pentagonal shaped, with 3-5 deep lobes, leaf sized 2~6cm long and 3~7.5cm wide. Flower pink or purplish red, 0.5~1.2cm in diameter. Capsule with a long beak-like protrusion. In the wild, the plant only blooms in spring, but people can enjoy the blossoms throughout the year in Taipei Collectible Botanical Garden.

全日照或半日照冷涼環境。壤土或砂質壤土種植。介質乾才澆水。生長於貧瘠地，不需要施肥。繁殖使用播種法。

It thrives in full-sun or partial-sun and cold environments. Planting in loam or sandy loam. Water only when the medium appears dry. It can grow in barren lands and does not require fertilization. Propagated from seeds.

葉片搓揉有特殊氣味，有單寧與天竺葵素等成份，許多國家作為草藥使用，能治療腹瀉、改善肝、膽功能、治療婦科疾病、牙痛和流鼻血以及治療創傷使用。

The leaves have a special scent after rubbing, contain tannins and pelargonin and is used as herbal medicine in many countries to improve liver and bile function, treat diarrhea, gynecological diseases, toothache and nosebleeds, and wounds.
