蝴蝶蘭屬多年生草本，原生種約70餘種，分佈於南亞、東南亞至澳洲的熱帶氣候區。單莖性附生蘭，莖短縮。以發達的氣生根攀附於樹幹或石壁上生長。互生倒卵形至長倒卵形、橢圓形葉。總狀花序腋生，花瓣寬大，脣瓣多型，部份品種有香味。蝴蝶蘭是重要的商業性蘭花，臺灣品種培育與盆花生產技術享譽國際。

A perennial herb in the genus Phalaenopsis which has more than 70 native species, distributed in tropical regions from South Asia, Southeast Asia to Australia. A single stem epiphytic orchid with short stems. It grows on a tree trunk or stone slides with well-developed aerial roots. Leaves alternate obovate to long obovate, and elliptical. Racemes axillary, petals broad, lips in multiple shapes, some varieties are scented. Phalaenopsis is an important commercial orchid; Taiwan is well-known internationally for its variety cultivation and potted flower production technology.

半日照溫暖環境，通風、高濕度可促進生長。介質使用水苔、蛇木屑或直接繫綁附樹栽培。介質乾就須澆水。商業性品種開花需要低溫刺激，在臺灣自然開花期於春季，花農利用設施栽培調控溫度，可以促成全年開花。

The plant grows in a partial-sun and warm environment; ventilation and high humidity can promote the growth. It’s can be grown in moss, tree fern chips or directly tied to a tree. Water when the medium dries. The commercial varieties need low-temperature stimulation to promote flowering while those in the wild bloom in spring.
