花椒屬常綠或落葉灌木，原產日本小笠原群島、琉球等地之高位珊瑚石灰岩濱海地區。天然樹型圓形，對生奇數羽狀複葉，搓揉葉片有濃郁氣味。雌雄異株，開花期夏季。雌花紅色；雄花黃綠色花朵微小，較無觀賞價值。

An evergreen or deciduous shrub in the genus Zanthoxylum. Native to the uplifted coral limestone coastal area of Japan, Ogasawara Islands, Ryukyu and so on. Tree naturally round in shape. Leaves opposite and odd-pinnately compound, emitting rich fragrance when rubbed. Dioecious, flowering in summer. Female flowers red; male ones yellowish green and tiny, less ornamental.

適合全日照環境。耐貧瘠及潮風吹拂，適合濱海地區種植。根系不耐積水，介質乾才澆水。定期修剪較長的枝梢以促進分枝並使葉叢更茂密。繁殖使用扦插法。

It grows well in a full-sun environment. With tolerance to barrenness and tidal wind, it’s suitably planted in coastal areas. The root is not tolerant to accumulated water, so advised to water only when the medium is dry. Trim off over-long branches regularly to promote the growth of new branches and leaves. 是製作盆景的良材，亦適合修剪為整型樹種植於庭園中或列植作為綠籬。葉片及果實亦可取代花椒，作為魚、羊肉煮湯去腥賦香用。

The plant is an excellent material of bonsai, they can also be trimmed and shaped into a topiary tree used in a garden or planted in rows as hedge. The leaves and fruits can replace peppers for removing the fishy flavor of fish and mutton and add flavors.
