姑婆芋屬多年生草本，臺灣原生，中國南部及東南亞皆有分佈。地上肉質莖粗短，有環形葉痕，由基部伸出許多短縮的芽條；莖端叢生盾狀或廣卵狀心形葉，葉先端銳尖。佛焰花序，淡綠至深綠色。雌雄異花，雌花下位，雄花上位，中央是不孕性花，花期春夏之際。漿果近球形，內含種子一粒。

A perennial herb in the genus Alocasia, native to Taiwan and distributed in southern China and Southeast Asia. Stems fleshy and stout, with ring-shaped leaf scars, shortened budlings grown from the base; spathe pale green to dark green. Monoecious, female flower below, male one above, and the infertile one in the middle; flowering in spring and summer. Berries nearly spherical and containing a seed.

全日照或半日照溫暖環境，高濕度可以促進生長。於黏土、壤土均可種植，富含有機質會生長旺盛。以分株及扦插繁殖為主，亦可種子繁殖。

The plant grows in a warm, full sun or partial sun environment; high humidity can promote the growth. They thrive in clay or loam soils rich in organic matter. Mainly propagated from ramets and cuttings, also from seeds.

葉片造型光澤美麗，可作庭園地被植物、室內盆栽。園藝常用水耕方式趣味栽培。全株辛、寒、微苦，傳統作藥用，但有毒需慎用。

Valued for the beautiful and shiny foliage, it’s commonly planted as groundcover in garden or in indoor pots. They can be cultivated in hydroponics to add interests. The whole plant has hot, cold and slightly bitter properties, usually used as traditional medicine, but it’s toxic and should be used with caution.
