五加科
學名:Osmoxylon lineare (Merr.) Philipson 'Variegata'
英名:Miagos Bush
Fine-cut lobes are the most distinctive feature of Miagos Bush, usually split into 5, just like 5 claws, hence the Chinese name. The fine-cut lobes have ecological significance as they can deter insects from nibbling the entire leaf to make serious damage. Dioecious flowers; male flowers clustered into balls and shaped like tiny rice meat balls while female flowers like pearls. Young fruits are white and turn purple-black when mature, densely arranged into a unique shape. The green leaves, black fruits, both male and female flowers spread upward in sequence at the top of the plant at the same time, which is of great ornamental value.
An evergreen shrub in the genus Osmoxylon, native to Southeast Asia. Alternate round or elliptical leaves with 4-6, usually 5 palmate lobes, so also named "five claws". Terminal umbels, dioecious. Female flowers open first. White fruits turn purple black when ripe; male flowers grow in a higher position and open later, resulting in the unique look that fruits and male flowers born from the same inflorescence appear simultaneously. Flowering and fruiting from summer to autumn.
Full-sun or partial shade, warm environment. Watering when the medium becomes slightly dry. Spray water on the blades to promote growth of new leaves. Apply long-active compound fertilizers once every season from spring to autumn. Pruning if the crown is overcrowded to better ventilate and prevent insect pests such as scale insects from hiding in the branches.
The unique tree shape is highly ornamental. Cultivars are mainly those with variegated foliage. Suitable for single planting in pots or gardens, cluster planting as shrubs or row planting as hedges.
