葉子像桂花，黃色花朵形似梅花，因而有桂葉黃梅之名。春、夏季開花，夏、秋季結果。花朵凋謝後花萼、胎座持續發育，從綠色變為紅色，看起來像花。黑色果實環繞於胎座上，某些角度像米老鼠的耳朵與鼻子，所以英文暱稱為Mickey Mouse Plant米老鼠樹。由於花朵、果實常同時存在樹上，容易造成一般人有黃、紅花朵同時開放的誤解。

The Chinese common name of the plant is inspired by the osmanthus-like leaves and the yellow flowers like plum bloom. It flowers in spring and summer and fruits in summer and autumn. After the flower withers and falls, the calyx and placenta continues developing, changes from green to red and exactly like a flower. The black fruit surrounding the placenta looks like Mickey Mouse’s ears and nose at some angles, so it’s also nicknamed Mickey Mouse Plant. The flowers and fruits often grow on the tree at the same time which is easily mistaken that yellow and red flowers bloom at the same time.

黃梅屬常綠或落葉灌木，原產東非。互生橢圓形革質葉，葉緣有具短刺的齒，形似桂花而得名。花頂生或腋生，黃色花瓣5枚。花凋謝後花萼、胎座持續發育呈紅色，核果環形排列於胎座上，形似米老鼠的耳朵與鼻子。開花春至夏季。結果夏季。

An evergreen or deciduous shrub in the genus Ochna, native to East Africa. Alternate elliptical leathery leaves with short thorny teeth along the leaf edges, named after Osmanthus in Chinese because the leaf resembles that of Osmanthus. Terminal or axillary flowers with 5 yellow petals. After flower withering, the calyx and the placenta continue to grow and turn red. Drupes are arranged circularly on the placenta, which look like the ear and nose of Mickey Mouse. Flowering from spring to summer and fruiting in summer.

全日照至略遮蔭環境。介質略乾就要澆水。春至秋季每季施用一次長效性綜合肥料。冬季低溫寒流或有落葉現象，應避免介質潮濕以免凍傷。繁殖使用播種、扦插與空中壓條法。

Full sun to partly shade environment. Water when the medium becomes slightly dry. Apply long-active compound fertilizers once every season from spring to autumn. The plant would shed leaves in severe winters and medium soil should be protected from frostbite. Propagated by seeding, cuttings and air layering.

枝葉較稀疏，適合多株叢植或列植為綠籬，盆栽需使用直徑1尺上的盆器種植。花朵大但數量少，觀賞價值略遜於鋸葉黃梅。豔紅色花萼與胎座能襯托黑色果實，可以引誘鳥類取食。

The plant grows sparse crown, so suitable for cluster and row planting as hedges. If planted in pots, the pot size should be at 1 foot in diameter. Flowers are large but small in quantity, so less ornamental than Ochna serrulata.(Hochst.)Walp. Scarlet flower buds and placenta accentuate the black fruits, which can allure birds to eat.
