三腳虌屬常綠喬木，臺灣原生，全台低海拔森林中常見，菲律賓亦有分佈。樹幹直，具多數枝條，枝條末端較扁；樹皮灰白色，有不規則垂直淡紅色粗紋。葉十字對生，三出複葉或少數為單葉；小葉橢圓形至倒卵形或倒披針形，近似革質，全緣，表面呈有光澤綠色，背面淡綠色。雌雄異株，花淡黃色、綠色或近似白色，腋生聚繖花序。蒴果成熟後會裂開，露出黑色種子。

An evergreen tree in the genus Melicope, native to Taiwan, commonly found in Taiwan's low-altitude forests, scattered in the Philippines. Trunk straight with many branches, flattened at the branch tips; bark gray-white, with irregular and vertical pale red rough stripes. Leaves decussate, ternate compound and few simple; leaflets elliptic to obovate or oblanceolate, nearly leathery, entire, glossy green on the surface and pale green on the back. Dioecious, flowers pale yellow, green, or nearly white, cymes axillary. Capsules crack when mature and reveal black seeds.

全日照或半日照環境，幼株較耐陰。生長強健，排水良好的土壤適合種植。以種子或扦插繁殖。

The plant normally grows in full sun or partial sun environments; the saplings are more shade-tolerant. A robust plant, well-drained soil is preferred. Reproduced from seeds or cuttings.

可作庭園景觀樹。蝴蝶幼蟲食草。木材可作薪柴。根可入藥，溫中散寒，理氣止痛。

The plant can be planted as garden ornament trees, and also as a food source for butterfly larvae. The wood can be made into fuelwood; the roots have medicinal properties which can be used to disperse cold, regulate qi and alleviate pain.
