鐵角蕨屬多年生草本，全世界溫帶以及熱帶、亞熱帶高山地區皆有分佈。臺灣產於中央山脈中、高海拔山區。根莖匍匐狀，密被鱗片；鱗片窄披針形。叢生一回羽狀複葉；羽片卵形薄革質，基部楔形，先端鈍形，先端邊緣呈鈍鋸齒緣，上部及下部羽片較短，有一個很小不規則裂片，側脈單一或兩歧。孢子囊堆著生在側脈上側的小脈上；孢膜寬線形，全緣。

A perennial herb in the genus Asplenium, distributed in alpine areas of temperate, subtropical and tropical zones all over the world. Taiwan’s community is produced in the middle and high mountains of the Central Mountain range. Rhizomes creeping, densely scaly; scales narrowly lanceolate. Unipinnate compound fronds tufted; pinnae ovate and thin leathery, base wedge-shaped, apex obtuse and obtusely serrated on the apex margin, upper and lower pinnae shorter, with a small and irregular lobe, lateral vein single or bifid. Sori piled up on veinlets on the upper side of the lateral veins; indusia broadly linear and entire.

全日照或半日照冷涼環境，自然生長於岩壁上，濕度高可以促進生長。分株或孢子繁殖。

鐵角蕨有堅強的生命力與繁殖能力，讓它得以分佈南極洲之外的各大陸，在岩石、牆縫等貧瘠、乾燥的環境也能生存。全草藥用。
