秋海棠屬多年生草本或常綠半灌木，原產巴西。株高60~90cm；紫紅色莖直立，常有分枝，基部常木質化。全株平滑無毛。互生斜心狀卵形葉，長10~17.5cm，寬5~10cm，葉面綠色，葉背紅色。白色花，數朵組成聚繖花序，開花期夏季。

A perennial herb or evergreen semi-shrub in the genus Begonia, native to Brazil. Plant height 60-90 cm; stem purple-red and erect, much branched, and often woody at the base. The whole plant is smooth and glabrous. Leaves alternate, crooked heart-shaped and ovate in shape, 10-17.5 cm long and 5-10 cm wide, green above and red below. A few white flowers comprise cymes, flowering in summer.

半日照溫暖環境，高濕度可以促進生長。夏天需遮陰不可曝曬。栽培介質需排水良好、富含有機質。每季施用一次長效性肥料。扦插法繁殖。

The plant grows in partial sun and warm environments; high humidity can promote the growth. Need shaded from sun exposure in summer. Well- drained medium rich in organic matter is preferred. Apply long-active fertilizer once a season. Propagated from cuttings.

秋海棠屬植物葉片與植株型態千變萬化，部份種類花朵也相當可觀，具有很高的觀賞價值，是世界各地植物園與植物愛好者的收集品。中大型種可作為室內或戶外遮蔭處的造景使用，小型種作為盆栽收集欣賞或成為組合盆栽的材料。

Begonias are highly valued for their various foliage shapes and plant styles; some begonias producing considerable flowers of high ornamental value are widely collected by botanical gardens and enthusiasts around the world. The medium- and large-sized begonias are suitable for the use in shade landscaping indoors and outdoors; while the smaller ones can be planted in individual pots or as material of mixed planters.
