八角金盤屬常綠喬木或灌木，臺灣特有種。枝幼時有棕色長絨毛，後漸脫落至無毛。葉叢生枝端，具長柄；葉片大，圓形，掌狀5~7深裂；裂片卵狀長圓形至長圓狀橢圓形，先端長尾狀漸尖，基部漸狹；上面綠色，下面淡綠色；兩面幼時有棕色絨毛，後無毛；邊緣有疏鋸齒，齒有小尖頭；葉柄和葉片等長或略短，基部有纖毛。圓錐花序，頂生，密生黃色絨毛，花期11~2月。球形核果，具南瓜狀稜，果期3~5月。

喜溫暖潮濕，半遮蔭環境，耐陰性強。種子或扦插繁殖。

具耐陰性，可作庭園景觀與室內盆栽。葉片可作切花使用。根、樹皮及葉可入藥。
