麥門冬屬常綠多年生草本，原產於臺灣、中國大陸、日本、韓國、琉球、越南。地下有走莖，節上有膜質苞片，鬚根末端常具肉質的紡錘形塊根。葉叢生基部；葉片線狀狹帶形，先端尖或鈍形，近全緣。花淡紫色，總狀花序直立或斜昇。花期6~7月。核果，熟時由綠轉為紫黑色，果期7~8月。

An evergreen perennial herb of the genus Liriope, native to Taiwan, China, Japan, South Korea, Ryukyu, and Vietnam. Underground stolons have membranous bracts on the nodes, and the terminal of the fibrous roots often have fleshy spindle-shaped tubers. Leaves clustered at the base; blade narrowly linear and tapering, apex acuminate or obtuse, nearly entire. Flowers lavender, racemes erect or oblique. Flowering from June to July. Drupe green and ripe purple-black, fruiting from July to August.

喜溫暖和濕潤氣候。宜土質疏鬆、肥沃、排水良好的壤土和沙質壤土，全日照或半遮陰環境皆可，耐陰性強、耐旱。以分株或種子繁殖。

The plant prefers warm and humid climates, full sun to part shade, as well as loose, fertile, and well-draining loam and sandy loam. Propagated by ramets or seeds.

具耐陰性可作為遮蔭處的地被植物，例如：大樓中庭、牆蔭與樹蔭下。亦可作為盆栽、綠牆的材料。膨大塊根可野外求生食用止渴，經加工炮製後可作為中藥使用。

The shade-tolerant plant is cultivated as groundcover in shade locations, such as atriums of buildings, wall shades and tree shades. It can also be planted in pots, or used as material of green walls. The swollen tuberous roots can be source of food and water in the wild, also made into Chinese herbal medicine.
