原產於臺灣、日本、朝鮮，常綠或落葉灌木，植物體被毛但易脫落。莖直立，多分枝。單葉對生，葉橢圓形、卵形、闊卵形，葉端尾尖或漸尖，葉基鈍狀，葉緣鈍鋸齒，薄紙質，葉翠綠色，兩面無毛，葉脈明顯，羽狀脈，無托葉。兩性花，聚繖花序；花萼杯狀或鐘狀，宿存；花小而多，花冠鐘形或管形，花淡紫色；花期6月。核果，球形，果熟時由綠轉為紫色，果期7-10月。

Native to Taiwan, Japan, North Korea, evergreen or deciduous shrubs. The plant has hairs which are easy to detach. Stems erect with many diverging branches. Leaves axillary, elliptic, ovate or broadly ovate, leaf tip acute or acuminate, leaf base obtuse, leaf margin blunt serrate, thinly papery, bright green, glabrous on both sides, veins distinct and pinnate, stipules absent. Bisexual flowers, cymes; calyx cup-shaped or bell-like, persistent; flowers small and plenty, corolla bell-shaped or tube-shaped, light purple; flowering in June. Spherical drupes, fruits ripe from green to purple, fruiting from July to October.

性喜光，稍耐陰，喜濕潤環境，也能耐乾旱，怕積水。喜肥沃深厚土壤，也耐瘠薄，對土壤要求不嚴，在砂壤土、壤土和素沙土上均能正常生長。繁殖可用播種、扦插法。

The plant enjoys sun light and humid environments, slightly shade-tolerant and drought-tolerant, highly sensitive to water stagnation. It prefers fertile and deep soil and also resists to barrenness. Not particular on the soil, it can grow well on sandy loam, loam and plain sand. Propagated by seeding and cutting.

耐修剪，可作綠籬、庭園焦點植物，具觀花觀果價值。
