Chinese Fringetree is named after its fine spike-like petals which resemble the fringes on ancient women's clothing. When the flowers bloom in April, the trees and the white flowers have earned the reputation of "April Snow". They are distributed in the mountainous areas of Taipei, Taoyuan, and Hsinchu, requiring sufficient sunshine and good drainage. As a close relative of Osmanthus fragrans, Chinese fringetree flower also has a fresh fragrance similar to Osmanthus fragrans. The young leaves can be used as medicine or as a substitute for tea. The mature fruit turns from green to purplish black for birds to eat. The hard wood can also be made into abacus beads and other utensils.
